Meet Northern California Camanachd!
Northern California Camanachd was started by a group of Californians who had interest in all things Scottish. Their research lead them to a short description of the game of shinty, a traditional team sport associated with the community celebrations of the New Year, especially in the Highlands and Islands. Over time, and after a few visits to Scotland, the group had proper equipment and rules, and many years of fun and camaraderie have followed.
Of course you don't have to be Scottish to play shinty! The founders of the club came to shinty through an interest in Scottish culture and their own ancestry, but many members in the many years since have been attracted purely on the basis of the sport itself, which is a great mix of hand-eye coordination, field strategy, and athletic fitness. It's good fun and a truly unique sport!
The NCC holds regular co-ed practices and welcomes anyone interested in learning this great Gaelic sport. Our league season runs from February to June, and we hold year around practices and new members are welcome any time. Additionally, there are ways that you can support Northern California Camanachd besides playing shinty. We are always looking for volunteers to help with various projects, and also for ideas of new and different venues for shinty and other Scottish cultural activities.
